From the Outhouse to the Penthouse
A day in the life of a private investigator
Last year I made the decision to reinvent myself and become a Private Investigator. It wasn’t long before I realized what a different and exciting world a Private Investigator lives in. Recently there was a case that exemplified that like no other.
It was a cheating spouse case and my assignment was to have close surveillance on a attractive woman who was suspected of cheating with her boss. On this day my surveillance started typically with your morning dog walk and trip to the store. Once the real action started my subject met her “boss” at the local plaza where she would leave her car and start her day of “work” by carpooling with Mr. Wonderful.
After a longer than expected 45 mile trip on I95 we arrived at an office building and I positioned my car in perfect position to get good video and not be detected. It was at this moment at 9:15 in the morning when I realized I had made a rookie mistake. I reached for my water bottle and much to my horror there was just one sip left. I looked at my “lunch bag” which was light to begin with and turned into an overgrown breakfast, it was empty. Yes, I was on a surveillance parked in a sunny parking lot in south Florida with no water and no food.
I’ve been trained well and I knew this day would come, so I cracked the windows turned on some 80s rock and got comfortable. I took a short video for documentation every half hour. I know its only one day and I was never in any danger, but I can sum up my experience by telling you my thoughts at the time of the videos.
9:15 Arrived at location both subjects entered the building through a rear entrance
9:45 I thought my boss told me these meetings were quick
10:15 Maybe they’re having sex in there right now…..They’re having sex and I’m getting cooked in a parking lot
10:45 My thermometer on the car radio says outside temperature is 84…Gotta get this car serviced that can’t be right.
11:15 My Kingdom for some water
11:45 Even if they are having sex they’re done by now….right?
12:15 I wonder if I will ever eat again?
And then it happened! Shortly after the 12:15 video both subjects exited the building and I we jumped back into action. At this point I was happy to peel myself off my car seat and turn on the air conditioner. I followed my subjects into a downtown area when it occurred to me that the lovebirds might have worked up a good appetite of their own. I began to dream of the possibilities. As luck would have it my subjects chose a perfect restaurant for both of us. The layout was wide open with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was also a perfect place for a young private investigator to get some good surveillance video. My subjects showed their inexperience by choosing a table in the middle of the room for everyone to see. As for myself; The Chicken Caprese with the balsamic drizzle was delicious and I went from the outhouse to the penthouse in twelve minutes flat. Just another day in the life of a Private Investigator
